The Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar Institutional Ethics Committee (IIPHG-IEC) ensures the ethical oversight of research activities, emphasizing the rights, dignity, and well-being of human participants. Guided by ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, the committee reviews, approves, and monitors clinical trials, biomedical, public health, and healthcare studies. It follows national and international guidelines like the ICMR’s National Ethical Guidelines and the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019. With a multidisciplinary and gender-inclusive composition, including external members for impartiality, the committee scrutinizes research proposals, assesses informed consent processes, evaluates risks and benefits, ensures participant safety, and monitors ongoing studies. The IIPHG-IEC also addresses serious adverse events, manages conflicts of interest, conducts regular training, and ensures compliance with evolving standards. Its Human Research Technical Review Panel (HRTRP) facilitates preliminary reviews to streamline operations, with ultimate oversight resting with the IEC. The committee’s work is characterized by its rigorous documentation, transparent decision-making, and commitment to ethical research integrity.

AIM :

The aim of the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar Institutional Ethics Committee (IIPHG-IEC) is to ensure the ethical conduct of research by safeguarding the rights, dignity, and well-being of human participants. The committee strives to promote adherence to ethical principles, uphold scientific integrity, and foster accountability in research, ensuring compliance with national and international guidelines while supporting advancements in public health and healthcare.
PURPOSE AND COMPOSITION OF IIPHG IEC

The Ethics Committee will review and accord its approval to a clinical study and carry ongoing review of the study at appropriate intervals, as specified in Schedule-Y and Good Clinical Practice Guidelines for clinical study in India and other applicable regulatory requirements for safeguarding the rights, safety and well-being of the study subjects.

Types of research studies under the preview of IEC-IIPHG will essentially include public health, health care studies, clinical trials (drug/devices etc.,) and may also include, but not limited to, the following:

      • Epidemiological Research
      • Social Science Research
      • Research on Medical Records or Other Personal Information
      • Research on Stored Samples (Genetic/Biochemical/Pathological)
      • Molecular Biology Research
      • Imaging Research
      • Health Systems Research
      • Implementation Research
      • Arrival assistance: airport pickup (optional, may require additional charges)
      • Registration process
      • Academic Orientation
      • Cultural adaptation workshops
      • Social events and buddy programs
      • Liaison with local authorities and embassies

Responsibility 

IEC would be the advisory committee to IIPHG with a role of Ethical Review of research proposals.

It will be authorized to:

      • Grant Ethical Approval
      • Withhold Ethical Approval (Till amendments made)
      • Deny Ethical Approval

All investigators, researchers, including head, and subordinate staff etc. are responsible for obtaining and maintaining the documentation of the research projects.
